My Story
Hello! I’m Anne. Here’s a little about myself and how Birch Street Studio got started.
Birch Street Studio began in 2016, but the name was in the works before I even knew it. When I first moved out on my own, my tiny apartment happened to be on Birch Street in Vancouver.
The name took on even more meaning when I learned that birch trees symbolize renewal and new beginnings. It felt especially fitting for how Birch Street Studio came to be. At the time, I was working behind a desk every day and feeling unfulfilled. I knew I wanted more creativity in my life, so I took the leap, left my job, and turned something I loved into my full-time business. It was a new beginning in more ways than one.
And then there’s the simplest connection: birch is wood, the material at the heart of everything I create. Somehow, the name ties together where I started, the change that led me here, and what Birch Street Studio has become today.
I started out making jewelry from buttons but began to feel limited by what I could create with them and started working with wood instead. I loved that it was a natural material with so many possibilities. Suddenly I could create almost anything I imagined, and that's when Birch Street Studio really began to take shape.
I started selling my pieces on Etsy and at markets in Squamish, BC, and today I run Birch Street Studio full-time from my home studio in Langley, BC.
Every Birch Street Studio piece passes through my hands from beginning to end. From sketching a design, to creating images for the laser cutter, I hand paint every detail, assemble each piece, photograph it, market it, package your orders, and do everything else that comes with running a small business. There's no big team behind the scenes. It's just me, and I genuinely love being involved in every part of what I create.
Most of my designs are completely original, and it's a little hard to put the Birch Street style into one category. You'll always find boho, geometric, and nature inspired. I also like to play with classic, cute and kitschy seasonal styles. My collections change throughout the year, but somehow they all still seem to have that distinct Birch Street Studio touch.
One of my favourite things about designing is creating pieces that remind you of something. Maybe it's a bird you always saw at your grandma's house, an animal you've loved forever, a summer night you don't want to forget, or the mountains from a favourite vacation. Sometimes it's simply a really great pair of geometric earrings that goes with everything while still feeling a little different from what everyone else is wearing.
Whatever draws you to a piece, I want it to feel like you.
When I'm not in my studio, I'm usually still doing something creative. I love puzzles, cross stitching, and hunting for treasures at thrift stores. I live in Langley with my husband and our two cats, who are very much our kids. I also have a deep love for animals and nature, which is probably pretty obvious if you've spent any time looking through my designs.
This little business allows me to create every day, work from home, care for my cats, and make a living doing something I truly enjoy. I'm incredibly grateful that something I started because I needed a creative change in my life has grown into the business that keeps me busy today.
I’m so grateful for every order, as each one allows me to keep doing what I love: creating meaningful little pieces that feel personal, special, and uniquely yours. Your support makes it possible for me to continue doing what I love, and I truly can’t thank you enough for being a part of Birch Street Studio.
Your friend and maker,
Anne
